June 17, 2022-June 24, 2022 | Lake Placid / Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday | Wilmington, NY | This campground was huge. It was a typical KOA, but, we were in the back away from a lot of the noise. We were able to walk to a pub (about 1 mile away through the woods) but it wasn’t consistently open when we wanted to drink. It got very chilly here and we did have rain for a couple of days. |
Lost Key in Woods
We started off quickly after we arrived for our first hike. It was very close by but we drove (about 2 miles away). The road to get there was a US highway without a sidewalk so it wouldn’t have been a great walk. We locked the car and proceeded up the hill. It was another wood walk, but, very pleasant. After we went up about 1000 feet and 2 miles we took a small break and watered the dogs and we proceeded down. When we got to the truck, there was no car key! WHAT? We lost the key on the trail? UGH! This trail is full of dried leaves and tree roots and rocks and how will we be able to find the key again? It is like looking for a needle in the proverbial haystack. Rich started walking back to the campground and I was assigned to find the key. Back up the hill I went, trying to run as much as possible. I had an idea where it would have fallen out (at the break stop) but it was near where we turned around. I got so lucky, but, I did find the key. It was sitting prominently on a rock in the trail as if someone else found it and laid it out for me to find. YEAH!
Whiskey Run 5K & 1812 Reenactments
On Saturday morning, the Wilmington Historical Society was planning a fundraiser that included a 5K run and some War of 1812 reenactments. We were very amused and I decided to participate. I haven’t run a 5K in years, but, decided to “Just Do It”. There was a small cannon onsite that they were going to use to start the 10K part of the race (so I was able to capture a picture of the blast). I really enjoyed the costumes and talking with the reenactors. They have clubs throughout the region and participate in events periodically. The weather is very damp and drizzly and temperature is in the 40s. It is about 7:30 am. I completed the race and ran the whole way and we stayed to enjoy the festivities for another hour, but, when it started raining, we left. Very memorable morning!
Hiking
Of course, we found trails to walk on nearly every day, even when it was cold. Adirondack trails are completely filled with rocks, billions of fallen leaves, and granite – lots of granite. And, in the rain, granite becomes very slippery and very hard. It is also often large 3-4 foot step ups like great big stairs. Poor Sunny. We had to help him up but he is doing surprisingly well.
Other Attractions Around Lake Placid
We enjoyed a few other attractions around Lake Placid since it was an Olympic Host when I was a kid.
