Driving in West Virginia

We use a Garmin RV 1090 GPS when we move. It is a specific application that probably relies on all the google roads, but, it computes the routes to avoid roads with low bridges, steep downhills, weight limits and the like. Typically, it works well. But, in WV, even the route it calculated was somewhat marginal for us. We decided that there must have been a pavement shortage in WV as there is typically never any shoulder. The Garmin was constantly warning us of steep descents and sharp curves. Now, we are from Colorado and we know a thing or two about mountain driving and steep roads and sharp corners, but, I will give it up to West Virginia. In some places it felt like we were on a on a corkscrew descent. We even encountered a Lazyboy recliner in one road on one of these crazy roads. When we left WV, we immediately learned that roads in WV were in much worse condition. It was a noticeable difference when crossed into Maryland.

The Cone of Silence & Greenbank Observatory

We were staying at Watoga State Park and there is virtually no internet or cell service for miles and miles and miles. We learned why. We had actually entered the United States National Radio Quiet Zone. This is the great part of a road trip. I would have never known that a place like that existed, especially east of the Mississippi. So, we decided we needed to roadtrip to Greenbank Observatory see this telescope. We had the dogs and they weren’t welcome so we didn’t learn as much as we might have otherwise.

Emergency Room for Sunny

After four days of throwing up, we decided Sunny had to go to the emergency vet as this just isn’t normal. It was only 50 miles but that translates into 2 hours 30 minutes of driving in West Virginia. It was best that we deal with it before we had to move. Luckily, it only cost $1000 and we left with x-rays, ultra sounds, probiotics and medication to stop vomiting. It worked! He improved quickly and we were off again. However, we are much more careful now when seeing what he is chewing on.

Hiking

It is what we do! We have found a number of nice places in WV and have accumulated many miles.
